The Dos and Don’ts of Hailing a Taxi

hailing a taxi in the cityWhen looking for taxi service in Minneapolis, there are many ways in which you can hail a cab. But not every one of them is effective or even safe. When it’s cold outside, or you’re in a hurry, you don’t want to have to stand outside on the streets looking for a cab. That’s why we have put together a list of dos and don’ts when it comes to hailing a taxi.

Whether you are coming from or going to an amazing place to eat in St. Paul, a Minneapolis brewery or anywhere else, follow these tips and tricks to get a ride quickly.

Do: Stand on the Right Side of the Street

Not literally the right side of the street. Ideally, you should be standing on the side of the street where traffic is going in the direction that you want to go. This will make it easier for a cab driver to see you while you are trying to flag him or her down. The cab driver will also not have to make a uturn to swing around and pick you up.

Don’t: Step Out into the Street

You may be tempted to step off the curb and into the street so that the cab driver can better see you, but this can be dangerous. A lot of times, cars are parked on the side of the road and obstructing driver’s views of who is stepping out from behind them. You should instead try to find an area where there are no cars parked and cab driver can easily see you hailing them.

The best place to stand is usually on the corner of a street.

Do: Get the Cab Number

Whenever you get into a cab, always make sure to check which company it belongs to. You should also always remember to get the cab number, just in case you lose something or have comments on the ride. That way, you can contact the cab company and they can track down which cab you were in, who the driver was and help you with whatever you need.

Don’t: Have too Many People in your Group

If you are in a large group of people, you may want to break up and take separate cabs. Unless the cab driver has a van, you won’t all be able to fit into a single car.

Groups consisting of five or more people will be able to get a ride more quickly if they break in two. Or, you can place your order online and have van sent to you. That way, you can all get a ride at the same time.

Do: Order your Cab in Advance

The absolute best way to hail a cab in Minneapolis and St. Paul is to order one in advance. This way, you will know exactly when your cab will be arriving, which will allow you to better plan your trip.
